of the European tradition (also known as Western Martial Arts) has only come under serious study since the mid-1990's. Prior to that, most people were only familiar with various modern pasttimes such as Olympic style sport fencing, reenactment displays, or stage fighting. In fact, there are dozens of surviving manuals from the middle ages and renaissance that are instructional in the combat forms popular in their day. Despite the abundance of such documentation, it is only recently that WMA has begun experiencing a renaissance of it's own, with avid historians and practical-minded fighters alike attempting to re-create the historical combat arts of Europe.
Like any martial art, those who choose to enter the field of WMA will find a source of discipline, character development, and good exercise. Additionally, the practitioner will discover the joy that comes from connecting to and resurrecting history, and exploring past cultures. WMA is about bettering ourselves both physically and spiritually, connecting to a lost heritage and aspiring to the nobility of knights and warriors of the past.
The primary track of our study group is the German medieval tradition, including (but not limited to) longsword, dagger, and hand-to-hand techniques. WMA is broad in scope, and we are always examining new facets of the arts. Because we are resurrecting actual fighting arts, it is important that those who wish to study with us be interested in mutual learning and have the welfare of all participants in the forefront of their minds. There is no room for recklessness or self-centered attitudes when practicing these martial activities.
